Thai Green Papaya Salad (Som Tam) Vegetarian

What a healthy dish!

Thai green papaya salad is one of the most commonly available and most popularly consumed dishes in all of Thailand.

Ingredients

  • 2-5 small red chilies, depending on how spicy you want the dish
  • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 3 cups of green papaya, thin strips
  • ⅓ fresh carrot, thin strips
  • 4 long green beans, chopped (3cm)
  • 4-5 small tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons of palm sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 4 tablespoons fresh tamarind (soak in water for 5 minutes)
  • 1 lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of roasted peanuts

To garnish

  • 3 long green beans, cut in half
  • ¼ green cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons of roasted peanuts

Instructions

Add the peeled garlic and chilies to a mortar. Then crush them for a minute.
Then add the long green beans, tomatoes, soy sauce, palm sugar, and fresh tamarind. Squeeze in the lime juice and add the wedges to the mix. Stir well, making sure the palm sugar has melted.
Next add the green papaya, carrot, and roasted peanuts. Mix again ensuring everything is well coated.

Tips

Garnish with the long green beans, green cabbage, and roasted peanuts.
